What can cause follicular cysts

Patient's question:

What are the causes of follicular cysts?

Doctor's answer:

Follicular cysts are caused by the following reasons: There are several obvious influencing factors:
Related anatomical regions (1) In a normal ovarian cycle, only one follicle develops and matures, while the other growing follicles atrophy and regress during the maturation process. It may be due to excessive secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in pituitary gonadotropins or an imbalance between FSH and luteinizing hormone (LH), leading to the mature follicle not ovulating and continuing to grow, or incomplete regression of atretic follicles, where granulosa cells still secrete fluid, forming a cyst.
(2) Due to various conditions causing ovarian congestion, such as chronic pelvic inflammatory disease or ovarian ptosis, which impairs ovarian blood circulation, leading to thickening of the theca layer. As a result, mature follicles cannot rupture and ovulate, and the fluid within the follicle is retained, forming a cyst.
(3) Sudden rupture of the vascular layer of the follicular wall due to certain reasons, allowing blood to enter the follicular cavity and forming a follicular hematoma. Over time, the hematoma gradually absorbs, blood cell components dissolve and disappear, while fluid accumulates and is retained, forming a cyst.
