Twentieth-Century Chinese Novel Theory Materials (Volume 3)

Author: Wu Fuhui (Editor)
Publisher:
Publishing Date: July 1, 1997
Features:
1. The modern Chinese fiction theory materials collected in this volume span from 1928 to 1937. Some that were not formally published in the same year but had actual influence are included in the appendix.
2. The scope of the collection includes essays, prefaces, miscellaneous reviews, notes, letters, speeches, monographs, etc. Long excerpts are appropriately abridged.
3. The selection focuses on theoretical writings by important writers on the genre and techniques of fiction. The selection of purely theoretical articles is slightly broader, while others are selected strictly and concisely.
4. Works on fiction criticism, experience-sharing, or self-narratives of creative practice are chosen for their clear theoretical tone.
5. Translations of foreign fiction theory, as well as introductions to foreign fiction and studies of ancient Chinese fiction, are selected for their stronger contemporary relevance.
6. The materials collected are generally based on the first published or first edition versions. When necessary, later editions are used for reference to ensure the style of the 1920s and 1930s is preserved.
7. If the original text contains obvious omissions, errors, or missing punctuation, they are directly corrected.
8. The selected texts are arranged in chronological order based on their first publication or first edition dates.
9. The authorship of the selected texts is based on their common pen names. Cataloging indexes are listed under the original publication names, with common pen names added in parentheses at the end. Anonymous works are marked as "(Anonymous)." If the anonymous author can be identified, it is further noted in brackets.
10. At the end of the volume, an "Index of Fiction Theory Materials in China (1928-1937)" is appended. Due to the diverse and extensive nature of fiction criticism materials, this index is not exhaustive and is provided for researchers' reference.
