Features: The inception of this series can be traced back to a crisp autumn evening two years ago. Yu Xiaokun, Wang Yuennan, and Wang Zhijiang came to Shanghai to solicit manuscripts. Several fellow writers gathered, and the conversation inevitably revolved around our shared interests. Xiaokun casually asked me, "How about putting together a series of modern and contemporary studies on the Pre-Qin philosophers? What do you think?" I replied vaguely, "That's a great idea." Yuennan then added, "Why don't you organize this series?" Only then did I realize that the idea for this project had already been firmly in place for Yu and Wang before they came to Shanghai.
