1. This dictionary selects words that appeared in Chinese after 1949 and have had a certain impact, with a focus on the historical period following the reform and opening-up in 1978. It also includes a small number of old words that have been revived or have acquired new meanings and usages, as well as words that originated earlier but were originally limited to specific regions, industries, organizations, or political parties and are now part of standard Mandarin. The dictionary also includes some popular words from Hong Kong and Taiwan, some of which have been integrated into Mandarin, while others are currently used only in Hong Kong and Taiwan and rarely appear in mainland Chinese publications. For the latter, an asterisk () is added after the entry.
2. To help readers better understand and master the words, some entries are accompanied by examples in the form of words, phrases, or sentences. The dictionary includes a total of 8,500 words and 3,200 examples. The word selection data was updated as of May 1996.
3. All the words included are from publicly published books, newspapers, and magazines, covering various aspects such as politics, economy, culture, military, and science and technology. The word types include individual words, phrases, abbreviations, as well as idioms and popular expressions.
4. Entries are arranged in the order of the Pinyin letters of the leading character, with characters of the same syllable ordered by the tone (neutral tone, first tone, second tone, and third tone). If the leading characters are the same, they are arranged by the Pinyin letters of the second character, and so on.
5. Entries are annotated with the Pinyin system. Words and closely related structures are written as a single unit, abbreviations are separated by a hyphen ("-"), and proper nouns have their first letters capitalized. Tones are not marked for tone changes, and neutral tone characters are not marked with a tone mark. Words containing foreign letters are not annotated with Pinyin.
