Publish Date: 2001-10-01
Features: In January 1895, Prince d'Orléans and his entourage set off from Vietnam, traveling north along the Red River, entering China through Hekou in Yunnan. They then entered the Mekong River basin via Simao. Their purpose was to explore the Mekong River basin within China. This book records their year-long journey from the Tonkin Gulf across the entire southwestern part of China, crossing the Lancang River five times, passing through the Nujiang Gorge twice, traversing the vast mountains and dense forests of the Hengduan Mountains, and finally reaching India via Myanmar. The author describes the lives and cultures of the various ethnic minorities along the way with a delicate pen. He writes about the help and support provided by the local indigenous people to these Westerners, as well as the dedicated chef, loyal servants, sharp-tongued and cunning interpreters, and money-grubbing packers who accompanied them.
