Features: This book employs research methods from multiple disciplines such as history, economics, and sociology to conduct a comprehensive, systematic, and in-depth analysis of Taiwan's society and economy. As a result, the findings of this research not only represent the first monograph in the study of Taiwan's socio-economic history but also introduce new breakthroughs in the structure and methodology of each chapter. The research on Taiwan's commodity economy does not follow the chronological order of historical dynasties but focuses on the key factors in commodity economy—commodity exchange and commodity markets. It examines both general commodity exchange and specialized exchange, while also dedicating a chapter to discussing the unique commodity exchange activities in Taiwan's commodity economy, particularly the development and changes in cross-strait trade. However, whether it is agricultural economy or the evolution of commodity economy, it cannot be separated from society, as economic activities are always objectively constrained by the overall social mechanisms. Therefore, in the second part of this monograph, we specifically study Taiwan's social structure, explaining how Taiwan forms its primary groups, social organizations, and the social structures of different communities through diverse and intricate social changes and behaviors. Thus, although this monograph is divided into three parts—upper, middle, and lower—there is an inherent connection between each part.
