The protagonist, Jill Carnie, is the aunt of Louise, a real estate agent, who is driving back from buying a house in the countryside when her car is knocked off the road and then beaten to death with a metal rod wrapped in cloth. However, Louise's death was initially believed to be a traffic accident. When Jill is defending Kenny Clarke for the murder of Mrs. Amber Dawson and seeking the death penalty, she discovers that Kenny is also accused of another murder in conjunction with a man named Rusty. During their investigation into the murder case of Kenny and Rusty, Jill and Anthony find that Kenny is innocent, while Rusty is not only the real culprit in this case but also connected to Louise's death.
