Publish Date: 2003-07-01
Features: This monograph conducts case studies primarily on documentary narrative forms and genres, which is relatively uncommon in documentary research. The author distinguishes documentaries from other film and television art genres, clarifies the ambiguous understanding of documentaries in traditional research, and redefines what constitutes a documentary based on the core element of the event site. This is an important topic in the field of film and television theoretical research. Starting with case studies on documentary narrative forms as the research of film language, the author places the study of documentary narrative forms within a broad social, political, and cultural context for comprehensive research. This not only leads to conclusions and definitions about the essence of documentaries but also provides novel perspectives and methods of thinking. The Practice Theory of Documentary Directing is a work that has been enriched and completed based on the author Xiao Ping's doctoral dissertation submitted in 1997. Over the six years, the author's views on documentaries have evolved and been enriched. Xiao Ping's exploration and relentless spirit in studying documentaries have enabled him to continuously advance. Of course, this monograph still has aspects that need improvement. I look forward to Xiao Ping completing the research objectives proposed in the preface at an early stage, elevating documentary research to a new level.
