Chinese Style in the Eyes of Westerners

Publish Date: 2001-09-01
Features: This book is the catalog of an exhibition held jointly by Guangzhou Museum and the Department of History, Sun Yat-sen University from September to December 2001, titled the same as this book. The paintings included in this book primarily consist of sixty export watercolor paintings on rice paper donated by British friend Ivan Williams to Guangzhou. Additionally, to enrich the exhibition content, Mr. Williams lent another twenty-one of his own treasures, and the British Martin Gregory Gallery lent four of its treasures. At the same time, after accepting Mr. Williams' donation, Guangzhou Museum acquired twenty more export watercolor paintings on rice paper in Macau, which were also included in this book. The paintings included in this book were originally untitled, and for the convenience of arrangement, we tentatively assigned rough titles based on the content of the paintings and organized them accordingly. Except for the new gaga album, the authors of most of the paintings remain unknown, and the creation dates can only be roughly estimated as the 19th century based on the era when these paintings were popular. Based on his research, Mr. Williams compiled a list of some institutions in Europe and America that hold Chinese export watercolor paintings on rice paper, which we have appended to the end of the book for reference.
