Features: The introduction of the course on creating opera roles was designed to address the shortcomings in the main subject studies of students in traditional opera performance programs. The traditional teaching method of opera repertoire courses, as a finished product teaching model of China's national tradition, is effective in comprehensively cultivating students' comprehensive performance skills in singing, reciting, acting, and fighting. However, its limitation lies in easily fostering students' strong imitation awareness and weak creative awareness, making them unskilled in re-creating traditional opera roles and unsuitable for performing newly compiled ancient-themed plays and modern plays. In recent years, the course on the history and theory of opera performance has been introduced to improve students' theoretical level in opera performance. However, the integration of theory and stage practice still lacks a transitional link. The introduction of the course on creating opera roles is intended to organically combine the repertoire course with the history and theory of opera performance, demonstrating a close integration of theory and practice. For actors, they must engage in re-creation based on the script, director, music, and stage design, which is the creation of performance, combining learned repertoire and guiding practice with theory. The repertoire course is like the body of a bird, while the history and theory of opera performance and the course on creating opera roles are like its two wings, enabling students to take off more quickly and better re-create traditional opera roles, as well as roles in newly compiled ancient-themed plays and modern plays.
