How to regulate irregular menstruation and dysmenorrhea

Patient's question:

I want to buy some regulating and period-pain-relieving herbal remedies. There are so many brands on the market that it's overwhelming. Can you recommend a few? Of course, the best ones would be affordable and of good quality. Main symptoms: irregular periods, always delayed or coming a few days early, severe abdominal pain on the first day of menstruation. Additionally, there are always a few days each month with excessive white discharge, and it has a slightly unpleasant odor. Thank you in advance!

Doctor's answer:

Hello!
Please refer to the following suggestions.
Irregular menstruation refers to a deviation in the menstrual cycle. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) holds that the causes of irregular menstruation are multifaceted, but the primary reasons are insufficient vital Qi and imbalanced qi and blood. In treatment, the focus should be on regulating the menstrual cycle to address the root cause. If irregular menstruation is caused by certain diseases, the underlying disease should be treated first, and once the disease is resolved, the menstrual cycle will naturally normalize. If diseases are caused by irregular menstruation, the menstrual cycle should be regulated first, and once it is normalized, the disease will naturally subside. Clinically, irregular menstruation can be broadly categorized into three types:
1. Premature Menstruation: When the menstrual cycle occurs 8–9 days earlier than usual, or when menstruation occurs twice within a month, it is called Menstruation Coming Too Early.
2. Delayed Menstruation: When the menstrual cycle is delayed by 8–9 days, or when menstruation occurs only once every 40–50 days, it is called Menstruation Coming Too Late.
3. Irregular Menstruation: When menstruation does not follow a regular cycle, either coming too early or too late, it is called Chaotic Menstruation.
In medication treatment, syndrome differentiation and treatment can be applied based on the underlying cause.
For Premature Menstruation with excessive volume, pale color, and thin, watery discharge, it is often due to qi deficiency. Treatment for this type of menstrual disorder should involve Chinese patent medicines with functions of invigorating qi, nourishing blood, and tonifying the uterus. Examples include:
- Bazhen Yimu Pills, take 1–2 pills per time, twice daily;
- Wuji Baifeng Pills, take 1 pill per time, twice daily;
- Yixian Jiuku Jin Dan, take 1 pill per time, twice daily;
- Babao Kunshun Dan, take 1 pill per time, twice daily;
- Regulating Menstruation Pills, take 1–2 pills per time, twice daily;
- Nüjin Dan, take 1 pill per time, twice daily.
For Delayed Menstruation with dark red, scanty flow, lower abdominal pain, and chills, it is often due to cold. In this case, Aifu Nuangong Pills can be used, take 1 pill per time,
