Features: Traditionally, the education and inheritance of Chinese painting relied on oral instruction between teachers and students, as well as copying from painted drafts. There was a lack of systematic methods and frameworks, inevitably leading to the loss of valuable techniques, such as the production of Tang Dynasty murals and colored sculptures, and the meticulous brushwork secrets of the Song Dynasty, which have been lost for many years. The greatest difficulty for ancient painters was the scarcity of access to original works, the rarity of renowned masters, and the unattainability of true transmission. During the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, the Jiezi Huayuan Chuan was published in four volumes—landscape, flowers and birds, grass and insects, and figures—which introduced basic techniques, broke down layers with detailed explanations, and provided comprehensive content. Despite poor material conditions and limited printing technology at the time, the book was meticulously organized, rich in content, and highly convenient for beginners. After its publication, it was extremely popular and remained a vital resource for young aspiring painters well into the early 20th century.
