When can one engage in sexual activity after production?

Patient's question:

Please let me know how long after having a baby can one have sexual intercourse?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, generally, sexual intercourse should be avoided within 4 to 6 weeks postpartum. During this period, the vaginal walls are relatively fragile and prone to injury, making sexual intercourse more likely to cause vaginal lacerations and prolonged bleeding. Additionally, the uterus has not fully recovered, and sexual intercourse can introduce bacteria, leading to endometritis and inflammation of associated organs. Furthermore, injuries to the external genitalia and vagina caused during childbirth may delay healing due to premature sexual intercourse, potentially leading to infection. Therefore, women should avoid sexual intercourse within 4 to 6 weeks postpartum. Husbands should also understand this and temporarily restrain themselves. Even if the uterus and vaginal walls have fully healed after 4 to 6 weeks, caution should still be exercised during postpartum sexual life, much like on the first night of marriage. It is advisable to use lubricants such as contraceptive creams or oils to moisten the vagina for a smooth sexual experience.
After the postpartum period, women enter the lactation period. Generally, normal sexual life can be resumed, but lactating mothers need to feed their infants, providing a significant amount of nutrients through breast milk, which results in high energy consumption. Therefore, adequate rest is essential. To maintain the mother's health and support the infant's growth and development, sexual activity should not be too frequent. Under normal circumstances, sexual intercourse 2 to 3 times a week is acceptable, or even 1 to 2 times a week is more suitable.
