Patient's question:
Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: Infertility after hyperthyroidismDoctor's answer:
(1) The number and quality of sperm in male patients with hyperthyroidism are significantly reduced.(2) Female patients experience menstrual disorders, amenorrhea, and an inability to ovulate or irregular ovulation, resulting in a significantly decreased chance of pregnancy.
(3) The risk of miscarriage increases significantly in female patients after pregnancy. The cause of miscarriage is unclear, possibly related to the quality of sperm and/or eggs, or influenced by the condition of hyperthyroidism itself.
The fertility of hyperthyroid patients is significantly reduced, but it is not fixed. Fertility can change with the fluctuation of hyperthyroidism. The worse the condition of hyperthyroidism, the poorer the fertility; as the condition improves, fertility gradually recovers; and after hyperthyroidism is cured, fertility may return to normal.
