Features: The fantastical and symbolic techniques in Li He's poetry have formed a unique style characterized by deep and lingering emotions, as well as exquisite and ornate craftsmanship. In the use of allusions, he mastered Du Fu's skill of effortlessly incorporating historical references, allowing implicit meanings to be expressed vividly through appropriate historical analogies, making even mundane content appear fresh. In his love poems, he adeptly adapted mythological and supernatural tales to enhance the atmosphere and, deeply embodying Li He's ability to blend the magical with the real in his imagination. These refined techniques are also well-represented in his quatrains. However, his use of allusions is also often obscure and difficult to understand. Yuan Haowen's "Quatrain on Discussing Poetry" states, "Poets always admire the elegance of Xikun, but lament that no one can write its annotations," which is well-founded! Although Li He's poetry covers a wide range of themes, he had limited worldly experience and lacked a profound understanding of social essence. Coupled with his eccentric personality and frequent illnesses, his reflections on social issues in his poems fail to reach a certain depth and breadth, and some poems are clearly tinged with melancholic and pessimistic sentiments. In comparison, Li He's poetic artistry is even more outstanding. With his extraordinary talent, he dedicated himself to creation, striving for novelty in every word, pouring his heart and soul into his work. As a result, his poems are hauntingly beautiful and moving, captivating and unconventional, achieving a high level of artistic excellence in Chinese poetry history, ranking among the finest.
