What are the reasons for breast pain?

Patient's question:

I am 23 years old. I had an abortion 2 months ago. Now my breasts are painful, and it has been a week. When touched, there seems to be a hard lump. Is this related to the abortion? Why is it so painful? I have also tested and found that I am not pregnant now. What are the possible reasons for these results?

Doctor's answer:

1. Physiological pain is a reason for breast pain in women: don't worry too much. Physiological breast pain is often related to the menstrual cycle, and breast tenderness around one week before menstruation is considered normal.
2. Breast tenderness during puberty: Girls aged 9-13 begin to develop breasts, and round, pea-to-bean-sized hard lumps may appear under the nipples with mild tenderness. After menarche, the pain will naturally disappear as the breasts mature during puberty.
3. Breast tenderness during menstruation: This is the most common type of breast pain, accounting for about 65% of all breast pain, with an average onset age of 35. The pain usually appears or worsens around 3-7 days before menstruation and gradually subsides or after the onset of menstruation. The severity of the pain varies each month, commonly a heavy feeling, dull pain, or occasional brief needle-like sensations. Additionally, it may be accompanied by tender breast nodules, which worsen with pressure, movement, or carrying objects.
