From 1950 to 1952, he served as a philosophy teacher at a high school in Constantine, French Algeria. In 1955, he became a leading member of the Algerian branch of the radical group "Socialism or Barbarism" and held a critical stance toward French colonial rule in Algeria. In 1958, he obtained the qualification of university and secondary school teacher in France, and in 1971, he earned a doctorate in literature. Lyotard taught at secondary schools for 10 years, worked at higher education institutions for 20 years, and engaged in 12 years of theoretical and practical work with the groups "Socialism or Barbarism" and later "Workers' Power." Afterward, he taught at Paris 8 University and also held positions at institutions such as the University of California, Irvine, and Emory University in Atlanta. On the night of April 20–21, 1998, he passed away due to cancer.
Lyotard's major works translated into English include Phenomenology (1954), Economy of Desire (1974), The Postmodern Condition (1979), The Controversy (1983), Heidegger and the Jews (1988), The Journey (1988), The Inhumane (1988), and The Political Writings (1993).
