What causes pelvic effusion and how is it treated

Patient's question:

Causes and Treatment Methods of Pelvic Effusion

Doctor's answer:

Hello:
B examination shows a liquid dark area on the left side of the uterus, indicating pelvic effusion. This is not a serious condition, so there is no need to be anxious. Pelvic effusion refers to inflammatory exudate in the pelvic cavity, which can occur after endometritis, where slightly viscous fluid leaks from swollen cells of the endometrial tissue and gradually forms a cystic mass due to surrounding tissue encapsulation. If left untreated, it can grow over time. If it becomes too large, medication cannot eliminate it, and surgery may be required. Pelvic effusion can be completely cured, but effective treatment must be based on identifying the causative pathogen.
In addition to normal pelvic effusion in women due to physiological characteristics, pathological pelvic effusion is often caused by pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or endometriosis. The causes of PID are often related to poor hygiene habits, such as sexual activity during menstruation or within one month after childbirth, or taking a bath after gynecological surgery within one month. Medical infections caused by unsterilized artificial abortion or induced abortion can also lead to pelvic effusion. For effusion caused by pelvic inflammation, posterior fornix aspiration should be performed to determine the nature of the fluid. Chronic infection foci may be due to inflammation of the female reproductive system, such as the ovaries or fallopian tubes, or may be caused by tuberculosis or tumors. Early treatment of PID is crucial, as delaying it can affect fertility.
To identify the causative pathogen of pelvic inflammation, special laboratory tests should be conducted, followed by symptomatic medication.
If tuberculosis is suspected, antitubercular treatment should be administered.
Aspiration of effusion is a diagnostic or symptomatic treatment measure and should not be performed frequently.
Because simple aspiration of effusion not only fails to cure pelvic effusion but may also increase the amount of effusion.
