Doctor's answer:

Balanced translocations are caused by the breakage and subsequent rejoining of segments from two chromosomes. Most individuals with balanced translocations do not exhibit any abnormalities themselves, but they may face issues when reproducing.
Since balanced translocations result in a chromosomal structure that differs from the normal one, abnormal gametes are always produced during the process of meiosis to form sperm or eggs. If these abnormal gametes combine to form a zygote, it can lead to miscarriage or fetal defects.
Although individuals with balanced translocations can also produce normal gametes, 2/18 of their gametes are normal. Because the chance of a balanced translocation carrier having a normal pregnancy is only 1/9, it may result in habitual miscarriage or malformed fetuses. Therefore, they may choose not to have children or opt for in vitro fertilization using someone else's sperm or eggs.
