What is the best way to store breast milk?

Patient's question:

Hello! I would like to inquire about the best storage method for breast milk because I am going to start working.

Doctor's answer:

Hello:
1. Colustrum can be stored at room temperature for 12–24 hours, while mature breast milk can be stored for 6–10 hours.
2. Breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator for about 2 days.
3. In the freezer or deep freezer, breast milk can be stored for 2–3 months.
4. All utensils, including the breast pump, milk storage bottles, milk storage bags, and ice trays, should be soaked in hot water with dish soap for sterilization.
5. Label all breast milk storage containers with the time they were expressed and use them in order.
6. Thaw frozen breast milk under lukewarm running water. Do not use a microwave, as uneven heating may scald the baby.
7. After mixing the milk, test the temperature by placing it on the inside of your wrist or your palm. The ideal milk temperature should be close to body temperature.
8. Thawed breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator for 8 hours and cannot be refrozen.
9. Discard any breast milk left in the bottle—do not reuse it for the baby.
