Features: [Editor's Recommendation] A sketch of a plaster bust is an indispensable basic course for students in art colleges to learn and practice sketching, and it is also an important part of the entrance examination for universities. At the same time, the study of plaster busts serves as a transitional stage for beginners or examinees to move on to portrait sketching, making the learning and mastery of plaster bust techniques particularly important. The importance of learning plaster busts lies first in the fact that they reflect structure, proportion, form, light and shadow, spatial relationships, and more, which are all essential paths in learning painting. Therefore, when studying plaster busts, we primarily focus on observing, analyzing, and researching the subject as a whole. Secondly, sketching plaster busts is an excellent method for beginners to recognize and master objects. In analyzing and understanding the structure and characteristics of objects, plaster busts, with their unique white color under fixed lighting, produce subtle variations in light and shadow. Although they lack complex color relationships, the expression of the three tones—“black, white, and gray”——provides beginners with excellent conditions for observing the whole, shaping volume, and depicting objects. Correctly distinguishing the relationships among the three tones is the key to learning and mastering sketching.
