Features: Perennial flowers, also known as perennial grassy flowers, refer to perennial herbaceous plants that bloom beautifully and are primarily grown for their flowers. The lifespan of perennial flowers can last for many years. Even if the aboveground part has bloomed or set fruit, the underground part remains alive and can sprout and grow again the following year, blooming anew. Examples include Impatiens balsamina, Chrysanthemums, Gerbera jamesonii, Ornamental Pineapples, Iris, African Violets, Birds of Paradise, and Anthericum. This book features 150 species, encompassing the existing cultivated varieties in South China, with many being newly introduced from abroad.
Perennial flowers are versatile in ornamental applications, suitable for planting in garden beds, container gardening, or as cut flowers and floral arrangements. Particularly in floral arrangements, perennial flowers are the primary source of floral materials, such as Chrysanthemums, Carnations, Poinsettias, Baby's Breath, Gerbera jamesonii, Birds of Paradise, and Stargazer Lilies.
In terms of growth habits, there are sun-loving plants that thrive in full sunlight, such as Carnations, Chrysanthemums, Gerbera jamesonii, Stargazer Lilies, Portulaca grandiflora, Impatiens walleriana, and Cirsium. There are also shade-loving plants that prefer scattered or soft light, as they are sensitive to direct strong sunlight, such as Ornamental Pineapples, Impatiens balsamina, Bicolored Begonia, African Violets, Whale Flower, and Anthericum. Detailed cultivation instructions are provided for each species in this book.
In terms of cultivation and management, seasonal temperature changes and variations in daylight length significantly impact the growth and flowering of perennial flowers. Proper management at the right time is essential for successful blooming. Primarily grown for their flowers, perennial flowers can be container-grown, arranged in gardens, or used as cut flowers. They contribute greatly to greening and beautifying home environments, as well as promoting the well-being of individuals.
