Publish Date: 2006-01-01
Features: Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775, in Steventon, Hampshire. Her father was a clergyman. Her family was a large one. Austen grew up writing with her siblings and even put on plays at home for her friends. Before the age of twenty-five, she wrote her first three novels, but these were not published until later. All the books published during her lifetime were published anonymously. A portion of the published Sense and Sensibility was signed: "By a Lady." The next Pride and Prejudice simply stated: "By the Author of Sense and Sensibility." In 1817, Austen completed her relatively short and uneventful life, and two of her six novels were published posthumously. Austen's novels rarely feature dramatic plots; they tell the stories of polite middle-class characters who attend country gatherings, sip tea, chat, and discuss marriage. However, with her brilliant wit, she weaves these tales in such a way that the events involving these characters become captivating. Pride and Prejudice tells the simple story of an English family with five daughters waiting to marry. Although the story was written many years ago, the lifestyles and ways of thinking of the people described in the book could appear at any time and in any place. The mother hopes her daughters will find suitable husbands and works tirelessly for this, a theme that is not limited to history. Although Austen never traveled the world, she had a deep understanding of human nature and enjoyed it, just as her readers today derive pleasure from it.
