Features: New Life Chinese—Intermediate Spoken Chinese (Volumes 1 and 2) summarizes years of Chinese teaching experience and is written based on the actual situations of international students. The series follows the patterns of spoken Chinese communication, organically integrating grammar, semantics, and context. With communicative functions as the main thread and situational dialogues as the foundation, it strives to blend ideas, scenarios, culture, and other factors into the lessons and exercises. The language is lively and engaging, enabling students to communicate proficiently, appropriately, and flexibly according to different communication contexts, purposes, and audiences. The teaching objectives and tasks of this book are to train the Chinese language skills and communicative abilities of minority students. The entire series consists of 60 lessons, with 30 lessons in each volume. Each lesson focuses on a specific function and is composed of five parts: Text, Vocabulary, Notes, Expressions, and Exercises.
1. Text
Each lesson consists of two dialogue segments, each set around a different scenario to practice oral communication skills based on a specific function. The scenarios cover a wide range of social life areas while remaining close to real-life situations, full of interest, and written in practical daily spoken Chinese.
2. Vocabulary and Notes
We select the new words from the text, provide phonetic annotations and Uyghur translations, and offer explanations and examples for words or idioms that may be difficult for students to understand, helping them grasp the text better.
3. Expressions
We highlight common and fixed expressions used in spoken Chinese communication, explaining their meanings and usage with examples, to help students master some unique Chinese expressions.
4. Exercises
The exercises still focus on the lesson’s functional theme, covering vocabulary, expressions, and sentence structures. What’s special is that the exercises also include numerous flexible scenarios, giving students room for creativity and further strengthening practical oral language training. Additionally, to enliven the classroom atmosphere and spark students’ interest in learning, we have selected songs, humor, tongue twisters, illustrations, riddles, and other culturally rich and stylistically diverse content from various newspapers, magazines, and books to insert after each lesson’s exercises.
This textbook is suitable for use in pre-college studies. Teachers can adapt it flexibly based on actual conditions. Intermediate and advanced classes can complete one lesson per class, while lower-level classes can take two classes to cover one lesson. It is recommended that teaching focus on students’ practical situational dialogue training and emphasize hands-on practice.
