How to treat high fever and tonsillitis in children

Patient's question:

My child is a boy, 3 years old. At first, he felt pain in his throat even when drinking water, and noticed mild coughing. Additionally, he had a slight fever and seemed lethargic. Please advise: How should tonsillitis with high fever be treated in children?

Doctor's answer:

If a child gets tonsillitis, symptomatic anti-inflammatory drugs can be given. While undergoing systemic treatment, local therapy can also be chosen to enhance efficacy. Methods include crypt irrigation, direct injection of medication into the tonsils, etc. If the child's main symptom is sore throat, it is recommended that parents consider giving pain relievers to alleviate the discomfort. If there is a fever, the method of fever reduction should be chosen based on the temperature. For temperatures below 38.5°C, physical cooling methods can be used. If the temperature is above 38.5°C, oral antipyretics can be administered. If the medication is not effective and the condition recurs frequently, surgical treatment is recommended. After the condition improves, it is advisable to encourage the child to engage in appropriate exercise to boost immunity and prevent recurrence.
