Features: At the moment of the world-renowned launch of China's Shenzhou 6 spacecraft, the "New Knowledge Series on Manned Spaceflight" was grandly launched by Jiangxi Higher Education Press. This is currently the most authoritative and up-to-date series of books in China that popularizes knowledge about manned spaceflight, and it is also a science popularization feast dedicated by the press to support China's "Shenzhou 6." In 2003, the successful launch of China's Shenzhou 5 spacecraft not only inspired national pride but also sparked a new wave of public interest in space exploration. To meet the demand of space enthusiasts, especially young people, for the latest knowledge in manned spaceflight, Jiangxi Higher Education Press and the China Association for Science and Technology Writers jointly planned this series, aiming to introduce the latest popular science knowledge about manned spaceflight. The series consists of six volumes: "The Space Ark—An Overview of Spacecraft," "The Space Shuttle—A Record of Triumph and Challenges," "The Cosmic Citadel—The Development Path of Space Stations," "Strolling in the Blue Sky—Astronauts' Spacewalks," "Seizing the Moon—Rediscovering the Moon," and "Interstellar Homeland—Mars Exploration and Development." They respectively introduce three types of manned spacecraft—spacecraft, space shuttles, and space stations—as well as three types of space activities—extravehicular activities, lunar development, and Mars exploration, covering the major achievements of human manned spaceflight technology today. Due to its significant subject matter, authoritative content, and alignment with market demand, the series was included in the "Five-Year Plan" national key book project by the General Administration of Press and Publication. The series was jointly organized and written by the authoritative research department for aerospace science—the China Academy of Space Technology and the China Association for Science and Technology Writers. Professor Min Guirong, an academician of the International Astronautical Federation and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, served as the chief editor, with a strong team of well-known science popularization writers such as Pang Zhihao, Wu Guoxing, and Zhou Wu, presenting comprehensive new technological knowledge about manned spaceflight worldwide, especially many declassified materials since the Shenzhou 5 launch, in an illustrated format. At the time of the successful return flight of the U.S. Space Shuttle Discovery and the smooth launch of China's Shenzhou 6, the latest knowledge and information about both spacecraft were also included in the series, and Jiangxi Higher Education Press launched it in a timely manner to delight. The series is colorfully printed with exquisite binding, making it worth reading and collecting. President of the China Association for Science and Technology, Zhou Guangzhao, also happily wrote a preface for the series, recommending it to.
Why explore Mars? For a long time, people have said that searching for extraterrestrial life has been the main purpose of Mars exploration. In fact, from a longer-term perspective and a deeper meaning, the real purpose and intention of humans landing on Mars, especially large-scale colonization, go beyond just searching for life. It is to expand the survival space of humanity and build a second home for humanity. As humanity continues to develop, technology advances, and the population grows, Earth's resources are dwindling, and the contradiction between humans and the planet is becoming increasingly prominent. Therefore, the only solution is to expand humanity's living space to the solar system and develop a new "garden" on another celestial body. Why choose Mars instead of other planets in the solar system? Because Mars is Earth's closest neighbor and is one of the nine planets in the solar system. Mars is the most similar to Earth, making it considered the most likely place in the solar system, after Earth, where humans can live and thrive. Mercury is too close to the Sun, with temperatures too high, radiation too strong, and almost no atmosphere. Venus is also too hot, with surface pressure too high. The giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are mostly gaseous, offering no place to stand. As for Pluto, it is both too cold and too far away. Therefore, Mars is humanity's only choice.
Dear young readers, regardless of whether you are male or female, or whether you are college students, high school students, or elementary school students, some of you may become Mars astronauts, builders of Mars, or even the first settlers on Mars. In the great journey of humanity to Mars, the task of building "Mars Chinatown" falls on our shoulders. This book is the first step in your education. Mars belongs to you.
