Features: Prion protein may be relatively unfamiliar to us, but when it comes to mad cow disease, almost everyone knows it. As the pathogen of mad cow disease, prion protein can truly be considered a "celebrity molecule": from scrapie in sheep in the 18th century to the large-scale outbreak of mad cow disease in 1992 that made people fear cows; from the discovery of kuru in New Guinea indigenous people in 1957 to the death of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the UK, numerous scientists have made unremitting efforts in prion protein research. American scientists Gajdusek and Prusiner were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1976 and 1982, respectively, for their contributions to prion protein research. Significant progress has been made in prion protein research, but many questions remain unresolved. This book systematically introduces the basic and clinical knowledge of prion protein, including a brief history of prion protein research, its biological characteristics, the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of prion diseases, and a total of 18 chapters. It aims to summarize the relevant research on prion protein and provide some insights for future studies.
