Features: "Keyboard Harmony and Improvisation" (hereinafter referred to as "The Manual") is a specialized teaching material compiled for the professional foundational courses—Improvisational Accompaniment and Keyboard Harmony—for undergraduate students in music education departments of music conservatories and music departments of normal universities in China, as well as for the keyboard harmony and improvisation courses for graduate students in improvisation and teaching. The Manual adheres to the principle of "concise explanation with ample practice," focusing not on detailed explanations of fundamental harmonic theory. Therefore, the text section provides only brief and general descriptions in three aspects: "Learning Content," "Key Theoretical Points," and "Exercise Requirements." The emphasis lies in guiding students to systematically and progressively train their keyboard harmony and improvisation skills, laying a solid foundation for future teaching. The teaching content of the Manual covers all harmonic knowledge, from major triads to distant key modulations. However, based on the requirements of improvisation and keyboard harmony training, the learning of harmonic vocabulary and techniques is divided into the following seven aspects: (1) Chord Connection, (2) Four-Part Harmony Exercises, (3) Exercises with Texture Accompaniment, (4) Melody and Harmony Development Exercises, (5) Accompaniment for Melody Exercises, (6) Melody Creation for Given Harmony Exercises, and (7) Thematic (Motivic) Development Exercises. This textbook is a specialized teaching material compiled for the professional foundational course—Improvisational Accompaniment and Keyboard Harmony—for undergraduate students in music education departments of music conservatories and music departments of normal universities, as well as for the keyboard harmony and improvisation courses for graduate students in improvisation and teaching.
