Features: The Selected Readings in American Literature is compiled and annotated by the Department of Foreign Languages, Fudan University. It is tentatively planned as three volumes: Volume I, from the American Revolutionary War to the World War I; Volume II, between the two World Wars; Volume III, from the post-war period to the 1980s. This is Volume I. Each selection in this book consists of four parts: "Author Introduction," "Introduction to the Work," "Selected Text," and "Notes." Some selections are omitted as they can stand alone as complete chapters. Writers and works are generally arranged in chronological order of birth and publication time. However, the order of a few writers and works is slightly adjusted due to literary schools or their influence and status. This book has been reviewed by colleagues from Peking University, Nanjing University, Shandong University, Xiamen University, Hangzhou University, East China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Foreign Language Institute, Luoyang Foreign Language Institute, and Shanghai Translation Publishing House. They have provided many valuable suggestions for the preliminary draft of this book, and their heartfelt gratitude is expressed here.
