Features: Algorithm research is the core of the entire computer science—recently, the field of algorithms has made significant breakthroughs, including the discovery of faster algorithms such as the Fast Fourier Transform, as well as surprising findings that for some natural problems, all algorithms are ineffective. These breakthroughs have sparked strong interest in algorithm research. The purpose of this book is to combine the fundamental research findings in this field, as these unified principles and concepts will make algorithm design courses easier to teach: Alfred V. Aho is the vice president of research and development at Lucent Technologies Bell Labs. Aho received a bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto in Canada and master's and doctoral degrees from Princeton University in the United States. Aho is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the ACM, IEEE, and AAAS, and serves as the vice chair of the Special Interest Group on Automata and Computability Theory of the ACM, as well as the chair of the Computer and Information Technology Advisory Committee of the National Science Foundation. John E. Hopcroft is a professor and the director of the School of Engineering at Cornell University. He received master's and doctoral degrees from Stanford University in the United States. Hopcroft is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the ACM, IEEE, and AAAS, and was awarded the ACM Turing Award in 1986. He also serves as the editor-in-chief of several internationally renowned journals. Jeffrey D. Ullman is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University. He received a bachelor's degree from Columbia University in the United States and a doctoral degree from Princeton University. Ullman is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the ACM. He was awarded the ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Achievement Award in Education in 1998 and the Knuth Prize in 2000.
