Features: The College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) is a national standardized examination directly supervised by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and organized by the National College English Test Band 4 Committee. This test was first administered in September 1987 and has been ongoing for nearly 20 years. Currently, the test is held twice a year, before the end of each semester. From the analysis of recent CET-4 papers, the trend in question setting emphasizes not only assessing students' foundational language knowledge but also focusing on their comprehensive language application skills. This is primarily reflected in the following aspects:
1. The listening section has introduced a compound dictation. This comprehensive test format not only assesses students' listening skills but also evaluates their spelling, pronunciation, note-taking, and memory abilities. It is expected that the listening section of the CET-4 will continue this trend in future exams.
2. Reading comprehension is the part with the highest weight in the CET-4. An analysis of recent exam papers reveals that reading comprehension covers a wide range of topics and rich content, including biographies, social issues, culture, daily knowledge, and popular science. Among these, articles related to school education and university life, as well as those on sociology, psychology, environmental studies, and biographies, are most common. The CET-4 syllabus specifies that reading comprehension passages should "feature diversified genres, including narratives, descriptions, expository texts, and argumentative essays." However, recent question setting has primarily focused on expository and argumentative essays. These passages are characterized by large amounts of information, complex structures, strong logical coherence, and a focus on abstract thinking such as summarizing, judging, and reasoning. The question formats mainly test students' ability to infer the implied central idea, general meaning, or details and facts of the passage.
3. Word usage and grammar structure are traditional question types in the CET-4, designed to assess students' vocabulary and mastery of grammar. Key areas of focus include visually similar but different words (homophones, homographs, synonyms, antonyms), collocations, and distinctions between verbs, nouns, and adjectives. The grammar section emphasizes 13 key points, such as subjunctive mood, participles, and non-finite verbs.
4. Cloze is a flexible question type that tests students' ability to apply language knowledge at the discourse level, becoming more common in recent years.
5. English-Chinese translation and short-answer questions are newly added question types in recent years, primarily testing students' foundational knowledge while cultivating their ability to understand, analyze, and express language.
6. Writing remains a crucial component of college English teaching, as it comprehensively evaluates whether students can meet the teaching requirements specified in the syllabus and achieve the goals of comprehensive language application and communication skills. Reviewing recent exam papers, outline-based essays, topic-sentence essays, and picture-based essays remain the main directions for question setting in the CET-4.
7. In addition to the above question types, we predict that the CET-4 may introduce a new type of question in the near future—Chinese-English translation. To help students familiarize themselves with and master this new question type, this book will introduce relevant techniques for "Chinese-English translation."
