Features: "Modern Japanese Novels Collection" was published in June 1923 by Shanghai Commercial Press, compiled by Zhou Zuoren, with eleven pieces by Lu Xun and nineteen translated by Zhou Zuoren. The purpose of "Modern Japanese Novels Collection" was to introduce modern Japanese fiction, so among the fifteen authors in this collection, only Kunita and Natsume are deceased; the rest are still living novelists. As for selecting these fifteen people from the entire literary world and thirty works from their writings, what criteria were used, I must admit that it was mostly based on personal taste. However, although we believe that pure objective criticism is impossible, we are unwilling to impose our limited subjective opinions arbitrarily. Our method is to select works by authors who have already been well-received and with which we can understand and appreciate, and include them in the collection. Therefore, the scope of our selection may be somewhat narrow. But within this narrow scope, both the authors and their works possess lasting value.
