Features: This certificate serves as the basis for assessment and recruitment by personnel departments. Passing the exam to obtain an authoritative, nationwide-recognized English proficiency certificate is a recognized credential for English proficiency evaluation and career selection. The National English Proficiency Test (NEPT) consists of five levels and an additional level, which will gradually replace existing English tests such as the junior high school entrance exam, vocational school foreign language proficiency tests, senior high school graduation exams, self-study public English courses, adult college entrance exams, and government-sponsored foreign language proficiency tests. It also outlines the direction for the composition of the college entrance exam and postgraduate entrance exam English papers. The NEPT system is designed and developed by the National Education Examination Administration Center. It is open to the public and divided into five levels. Its purpose is to reasonably set evaluation standards for each level based on China's actual English teaching and societal needs, using a unified ability scale. It focuses on testing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, ensuring the equivalence of exam scores across different sessions at the same level. Gradually, it will connect with admissions, overseas studies, and self-study exams, diversifying the application of exam scores. Level 3 of PETS is the middle level among the five, with standards equivalent to the English proficiency of senior high school graduates who have studied public English for two years in a university or self-studied a comparable level of English. Candidates who pass this level meet the English proficiency requirements for administrative secretaries, executive assistants, general managers, technical personnel, and employees in foreign companies. This textbook consists of 19 chapters, each covering a communicative topic. The first page of each chapter briefly describes the expected English communicative level for PETS Level 3 candidates in that chapter. Each chapter is divided into 1-2 units, covering parts of the communicative scenarios related to the topic. The textbook contains 27 units, each including: 1. Dialogues: Based on each communicative topic, several dialogue materials are provided. The dialogues aim to be realistic and natural in language, focusing on training candidates' listening and speaking skills. Each dialogue is preceded by a few sentences explaining the context to help candidates understand the dialogue. 2. Texts: The texts are reading materials that reflect the topic. To enhance candidates' interest and aid their comprehension, and to encourage oral practice based on familiar information, each unit includes five questions after the text. 3. Vocabulary and Phrases: These are new words and phrases that appear in the dialogues and texts of the unit, summarized in order of appearance in the dialogues and texts, including the international phonetic alphabet, part of speech, Chinese definitions for words, and Chinese definitions for phrases. 4. Notes: These target the dialogues and texts, covering three aspects: First, introducing relevant cultural background knowledge to deepen candidates' understanding of the dialogues and texts; second, highlighting difficulties in grammar and vocabulary; third, providing grammatical analysis of complex sentences and explaining linguistic points and key knowledge with examples, aiming to train candidates' ability to flexibly use language. 5. Exercises: These are designed to test candidates' learning progress on the unit's topics and key points. The questions align with the exam syllabus to facilitate preparation for PETS Level 3. 6. Supplementary Readings: To help candidates gain a deeper understanding of related topics and improve reading skills, a supplementary reading is provided after each unit.
