This edition is based on the Tianjin Ri Ri Xinwen version, with reference to the serialized form of Xiu Xiang Novel, the Yandong Library edition, and the Yi Shu Shu Fang edition. The text and punctuation have been corrected, and some simple annotations have been added for convenience. There is also a Volume Two with six chapters, compiled as an appendix based on the standalone edition of Shanghai Liangyou Book Company, without annotations. Hu Shi said: Lao Can You Ji excels in descriptive techniques. Whether depicting people or landscapes, the author avoids clichés and clichéd expressions, always striving to coin new words and create realistic descriptions.
