Features: Since its first edition published in 1993, this book has had a significant impact in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pharmacology, and has been well-received and praised by a broad readership. It is widely used as a reference book for conducting TCM pharmacological research and new drug development. The book has received several prestigious awards, including the First Prize of the National Excellent Science and Technology Books Award, the National Book Award, and the Third Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, making it one of the few outstanding medical and pharmaceutical monographs with the most national awards and the highest level. To maintain this honor, a strong writing team of over 380 experts from nearly 100 institutions, including universities and research institutes across the country, was formed to meticulously revise and compile the second edition of this book over a span of three years.
This edition enriches the content of the first edition by incorporating the latest achievements in TCM pharmacological research over the past decade, adding new techniques, methods, and case studies in TCM pharmacological research, reflecting the new advancements and levels of contemporary TCM pharmacological research. It is characterized by its timeliness. The book not only summarizes theories and research methods but also includes more than 530 research method examples (with over 130 new examples added compared to the first edition, representing a 30% increase), thereby integrating theory, methods, and examples more closely, making the content more practical, up-to-date, and user-friendly.
The second edition consists of 32 chapters, divided into three parts: Part One covers basic knowledge of new drug research, fundamental theories of TCM, and research methods for TCM basic theories; Part Two focuses on the pharmacological research methods for the efficacy of various TCMs; and Part Three discusses animal models for "syndrome" and research methods for the pharmacological effects of TCMs. Appendices include summaries of pharmacological efficacy studies for new TCM drugs. Most of the examples in the book are based on the research work of the experts and collected relevant materials, while some are unreleased research data. A few experiments are written by experts who have experience in this field, based on published research papers. Each example includes principles, materials, methods, results, notes, precautions, and evaluation items. The methods are detailed and specific, making the book highly readable and actionable.
This book is suitable for reference by personnel engaged in TCM pharmacological teaching, research, and new drug development, as well as relevant pharmaceutical inspection personnel. It can also serve as a selective teaching material or reference book for graduate students in pharmaceutical physiology at universities.
