Features: The Novels of Du Mu Hongliang is a high-level and outstanding selection. Du Mu Hongliang achieved remarkable success in both long and short fiction during the 1930s and 1940s, but it was his short stories that truly reflected his artistic and ideological heights. However, from 1949 to 1966, inland publishers only published the revised long novel Colored Grassland of. Since the 1980s and 1990s, although The Collected Works of Du Mu Hongliang have been published, and his short stories have appeared in five or six selections, unfortunately, the selection criteria have been rather arbitrary and lack scientific rigor. Thus, Wang Furén’s The Novels of Du Mu Hongliang is indeed of great value. This selection was compiled by Wang Furén after he divided the author’s fiction of the 1930s and 1940s into three stages, conducting in-depth research, organization, and rigorous selection and elimination of works from each stage. He not only included First Kiss and Early Spring, which are renowned as "masterpieces of modern Chinese short fiction" for their unprecedented psychological portrayal, but also demonstrated his unique artistic insight in selecting other works. The included Snowy Night, as Wang Furén states in the "Preface," is a work with a style reminiscent of Chekhov’s, achieving a high level in terms of material selection, psychological depiction, atmosphere, and emotional expression. Plasticity and March Night Serenade fully showcase Du Mu Hongliang’s extraordinary talent in portraying female psychology, while Butterfly Dream, The Piano, and The Goddess carry a gentle melancholy and convey the author’s longing and admiration for his wife, Xiao Hong, who passed away tragically. Distant Sand Storm is a famous early work by Du Mu Hongliang, but previous scholars have primarily focused on its unique artistic depiction. Wang Furén, however, argues that its outstanding quality lies in the characterization of the bandit and coal miner, which "fundamentally challenges our life values centered on the role of the submissive subject." As a result, Distant Sand Storm stands as one of the few works in the entire canon of modern Chinese short fiction that can rival its beauty.
