Author: Song Haohao

Publish Date: 2006-01-01
Features: This book is both profound and accessible, introducing the fates of Chinese literary figures through the lenses of Li Yu of the Southern Tang, Li Gao of the late Tang, Wen Tianxiang of the late Song, and Na Lanxingde of the Qing Dynasty. The writing is grand and powerful, striking the perfect balance between knowledge and emotion. The author's talent and scholarship surpass his age. The book features the vivid structure of historical fiction and innovative breakthroughs in literary style. It can be said that the author is a deeply knowledgeable writer born in the 1980s, a young, accomplished scholar. The book opens with Li Yu of the Southern Tang and concludes with Su Manshu, spanning over a millennium in its exploration of the lives of nine influential Chinese literary figures and the personal charm they displayed in historical adversity. Many immortal literary works of China are closely tied to the author's own experiences of wandering or traveling. For example, Wang Bo wrote "Preface to the Pavilion of Prince Teng" during a journey south for a family visit; "The Ballad of the Pipa" was composed by Bai Juyi while in exile far from Chang'an, where the hardships of travel and political disappointment inadvertently gave birth to timeless masterpieces. As for the renowned Li Bai, he considered "Leaving the Country with a Sword and Saying Goodbye to Family on a Long Journey" a major life event. It was through his travels that he created his magnificent journey in Sichuan and earned his immortal poetic fame. And Li Yu in this book—most of his timeless, sorrowful, and wistful lyrics were written during his journey north and while imprisoned in Bianliang. These literary figures share a common trait: they all had experiences of being away from home, and the hardships of travel and exile inspired them to produce works like a gushing spring and a tide of masterpieces. This is also one of the reasons for the title of my book.
