Features: Since the reform and opening-up, China has achieved remarkable accomplishments in human development. At the same time, both China and the international community have recognized the risks and challenges China faces in addressing issues of equity and effectively advancing poverty reduction. Equity is at the core of human development. China Human Development Report 2005 seeks to incorporate a human development perspective into existing policy discussions. The report argues that China's inequities have reached a significant level, primarily manifesting in disparities between urban and rural areas, regions, genders, and different social groups. The report concludes that to achieve inclusive, equitable, and sustainable human development, China needs to increase investment in areas such as health, education, gender equality, and social security. It also emphasizes the necessity of strengthening commitments and actions related to equitable development, ensuring that different regions and populations can fairly share the benefits of development. This is crucial for China's poverty reduction efforts, social progress, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. This report was commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) China and coordinated by the China Development Research Foundation.
