The book has three prominent features:
First, it is the first time that the full text of "Speech by Comrade Hu Jintao at the Population, Resources, and Environment Symposium in 2003" is published in its entirety and serves as the preface to the book. Comrade Hu Jintao's speech provides a comprehensive overview and offers high-level insights, profoundly elaborating on the strategic importance of population, resources, and environmental work in the reform and opening-up and socialist modernization drive. It plays a significant guiding role in strengthening the awareness of China's national conditions—its large population, scarce per capita resources, and heavy environmental protection pressures—as well as the understanding of the need to unify economic, social, and environmental benefits. It also reinforces the awareness of sustainable development through resource conservation, ecological protection, and circular utilization, further enhancing the sense of responsibility and urgency in population, resources, and environmental work.
Second, the book is jointly edited by the main leaders of three ministerial-level departments in China, a rare occurrence. These departments are the main authorities responsible for population control, resource conservation, and environmental protection. The publication of this book not only reflects the state's active promotion of the importance of population, resources, and environmental work but also provides valuable learning materials for the broad masses of the people, especially for leaders.
Third, the book emphasizes the organic unity of theory and practice, offers comprehensive and up-to-date information, and strives to be visually engaging. Attendees agreed that the publication of this book is of positive significance for fully implementing the important spirit of Comrade Hu Jintao's speech at the Central Symposium on Population, Resources, and Environmental Work, effectively carrying out population, resources, and environmental work in the new era, establishing the concept of "people-centered" development, the scientific outlook on development, and a correct view of performance, and achieving coordinated and sustainable development of the economy, population, resources, and environment.
