The outstanding feature of this series is its organization into units based on provinces, cities, and districts, with several volumes edited and published. Each volume is a standalone book, introducing the most distinctive highlights of each place from different perspectives, richly illustrated with text and images. Like the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, the Liao River is also an important mother river of the Chinese nation. It flows through northern and southern Liaoning, making the black land east of Shanhai Pass exceptionally fertile and prosperous. The name "Liaoning" is derived from the wish for eternal peace of the Liao River, and the province is named after the river. In ancient China, Liaoning was often regarded as a remote and barbaric land far from the Central Plains. In the 16th century, the Jurchen people rose here and ultimately established the last strong feudal dynasty of China—the Qing Dynasty. Today, Liaoning is an important industrial base in China. It was affectionately known as the "Industrial Cradle of New China" and the "Eldest Son of the Republic" for its significant contributions to China's industrial development in the early days of the People's Republic of China. This book presents, through detailed text and images, the long-standing civilization and the dramatic modern and contemporary history of Liaoning.
