Elementary Chinese Conversation 1, 2nd Edition - Full Set of 2 Volumes

Author: Dai Guifu
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-10-01
Features: This textbook consists of two volumes: Text and Exercises, and Vocabulary List, Text Translation and Exercise Answer Key. This (second edition) is designed for students with zero prior knowledge, with the selected vocabulary primarily based on the "Outline for Chinese Language Proficiency Vocabulary and Characters" published by the National Office for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, specifically Level A vocabulary. Building upon the original textbook, this new edition has undergone revisions to some texts and includes additional new texts, expanding from the original two volumes to the current three volumes. Adhering to the principles of language learning and the methodology of beginner-level oral Chinese teaching, and drawing on effective teaching practices, the following two writing principles have been adopted:
1. Shift from a traditional word-centric approach (semantic to pragmatic) to a sentence-centric approach (pragmatic to semantic).
2. Begin segment-level training only after students have mastered common sentence patterns and simple dialogues in beginner-level oral Chinese.
To implement these two principles, the textbook adopts the following format from the very beginning of each lesson:
- Directly engage students in speaking from the first lesson, learning and correcting pronunciation within the context of natural speech flow.
- Pronunciation and intonation remain a key focus throughout, with relevant exercises designed to address these aspects.
- Each lesson includes dialogues and short narrative passages.
- Both dialogues and passages are presented alongside Chinese characters and pinyin.
- All dialogues and language points are accompanied by English translations, compiled as appendices at the end of the book.
- Annotations provide explanations of language and cultural points in the texts.
- Each lesson features a variety of lively and diverse exercises, incorporating visuals and text to promote communicative competence.
- "Did You Know?" sections are supplementary oral Chinese tips or cultural knowledge aligned with the texts and students' interests.
- The textbook is accompanied by a CD, published by Peking University Audiovisual Press.
