Features: Generally, in calligraphy, the use of the brush is paramount. To study the brushwork of the ancients, genuine works are indispensable. Many delicate and nuanced aspects of brushwork cannot be expressed through stone carvings, such as the subtle hint of the brush tip when entering the paper inversely, the occasional trailing silk when ending the stroke, as well as the dry brush and flying white caused by changes in ink color. Therefore, the ancients proposed the fundamental requirement that "the structure can be seen in stone inscriptions, but the brushwork cannot be without genuine works." Unfortunately, genuine works by renowned calligraphers are not accessible to everyone. Thus, the ancients relied on engraved calligraphy to preserve their legacy. However, once engraved calligraphy is carved with a slanted knife, its appearance changes, and repeated re-engraving only further distances it from the original brushwork. This is why Kang Youwei advocated for upholding stone inscriptions while criticizing engraved calligraphy.
In the past century, with the advancement of printing technology, genuine works of the ancients have finally been preserved through photolithography, which is a significant event in the world of calligraphy. To meet the needs of (calligraphy enthusiasts), our editorial team has specially launched the "Authentic Calligraphy of Famous Calligraphers" series for the first time. Through color plate photolithography, we strive to make the reproductions indistinguishable from the originals, providing calligraphy enthusiasts with materials for copying, appreciation, and collection. All works published in this series are rare treasures of (famous calligraphers of past dynasties), offering invaluable resources for calligraphy researchers.
