Features: Wise men have come to bestow their wisdom upon you, I have come to draw from your wisdom. Behold, I have discovered something beyond wisdom—there is a burning heart within you that burns ever brighter, yet you overlook its expansion, only mourning the passing of your own time. Those who chase the physical life fear the grave. Gibran (1883–1931) was a Lebanese poet, prose writer, and painter. Born on January 6, 1883, in Bsharri, a northern mountain village in Lebanon, he passed away on April 10, 1931, in New York, USA. At the age of 12, he accompanied his mother to the impoverished immigrant district in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended an immigrant school. Two years later, he returned to Lebanon and enrolled in the Bsharri School of Wisdom (Shikma), where he studied Arabic, French, and painting. During this time, he founded the radical magazine Al-Haqqa (The Truth). In 1908, he published the novel The Spirit of Rebellion, which enraged the authorities, leading to the confiscation, burning, and banning of his works, as well as his exile to the United States. Later, he moved to France and studied painting and sculpture at the Paris Academy, receiving encouragement from the master sculptor Auguste Rodin. In 1911, he returned to Boston; the following year, he relocated to New York, dedicating himself to literary and artistic pursuits. He organized and led the Pen Club for expatriate writers in America, becoming a representative of the expatriate literary movement. After his death, his remains were returned to his homeland and buried in his birthplace.
In his youth, Gibran primarily wrote novels, but after settling in the United States, he gradually shifted to prose poetry. His novels were almost all written in Arabic, including the short story collections The Bride of the Desert and The Spirit of Rebellion, as well as the novel The Broken Wings. The Broken Wings depicts the tragic fate of Eastern women and their struggle against fate, condemning greed, deceit, and submission while praising self-respect, willpower, and strength. His novels are distinguished by the philosophical monologues, dialogues, and narratives of his protagonists, especially the passionate confessions of the oppressed and wronged, making them significant early achievements in modern Arabic literature. His prose and prose poetry were written in both Arabic and English. In Arabic, he published essays such as Short Chapters on Music, prose poems like Tears and Laughter and The Storm, poetry collections such as The Canticles of the Sun (Al-Ma'ani), and works such as Famous and Unusual Stories and Whispers of the Soul. In English, he published essays like The Madman, prose poems such as The Prophet, Sand and Foam, The Son of Man Jesus, The Garden of the Prophet, and The Wanderer, as well as the poetic dramas Gods of Earth and Laughter and His Lover.
Gibran was one of the first writers in modern Arabic literature to use the prose poem form, with The Prophet being his masterpiece. The protagonist is a wise man about to embark on a journey back to his Eastern homeland. In his farewell address, he discusses a series of profound social and philosophical topics—love and beauty, life and death, sin and punishment, marriage and family, law and freedom, religion and good and evil, reason and passion—filled with wisdom, using novel metaphors and imbued with an Eastern flavor. Gibran also illustrated the book with deeply meaningful, romantically toned images.
Gibran's works often revolve around themes of love and beauty. His thought was heavily influenced by Nietzsche's philosophy, and his works frequently express a cynical attitude or hint at mystical forces. He made significant contributions to the development of modern Arabic literature. His works have been translated into over 20 languages, with the earliest Chinese translation being Bing Xin's rendition of The Prophet. He was honored as a global cultural figure on the 50th anniversary of his death and the 100th anniversary of his birth.
