For literary enthusiasts who are native Chinese speakers but not very familiar with Joyce's works, a question may arise: This novel is so highly praised and revered, its artistic quality must be extraordinary. Can we appreciate it through our own literature? From a serious and artistic perspective, Joyce's seemingly haphazard yet deeply meaningful construction in this masterpiece, his humorous and vivid character portrayals that cut to the bone in the midst of laughter, the plot arrangements that soar into the heavens and resonate with each other everywhere, and his ever-changing yet perfectly appropriate style—all are brought to life through his extremely precise language. James Joyce (1882–1941) was an Irish renowned modernist novelist who spent seven years completing his masterpiece, Ulysses (1922). The protagonist of the novel, Bloom, is an advertising salesman for a newspaper in Dublin. The author uses many realistic details to describe the experiences of this troubled petty bourgeois and his wife Molly, who seeks pleasure, and Stephen, a young student searching for a spiritual father, over the course of one day and night. In essence, it reflects the loneliness and despair of people in modern Western society. The author compares the protagonist of the novel to Odysseus, the hero of Homer's epic The Odyssey, and compares his wandering in Dublin to Odysseus's ten years of wandering. Joyce extensively used the "stream of consciousness" technique in Ulysses, creating a new style and becoming a pioneer of modernist novels. He not only innovated in word choice and sentence structure but also employed numerous allusions, quotations, and myths. After the novel's publication, certain passages were criticized as "obscene" and were banned from publication in the United States and Britain for a long time. It was only in 1933 that this masterpiece was finally made available to readers in the United States and Britain. The translator has studied this book for many years, and this Chinese translation is not only faithful and fluent but also includes detailed annotations for numerous allusions, quotations, and other elements.
