It has now been fully revised, corrected for errors, and supplemented with appendices. The book is divided into eight chapters, covering the periods of the Western Zhou and Spring and Autumn, the Warring States, the Qin and Han, the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, the Sui and Tang, the Song, the Yuan, and the Ming and Qing dynasties, systematically examining the history of the development of Chinese handicraft and commerce before the Opium War.
