Features: Liu Gongquan (AD 778-865), styled Chengxuan, was a native of Huayuan in Jingzhao (now Yaoyuan, Shaanxi). He was a renowned calligrapher in late Tang Dynasty, succeeding Yan Zhenqing. Early in his career, Liu studied Wang Xizhi and later mastered the brushwork of Yang Xuanzong, Yan Zhenqing, and other calligraphers from the Sui and Tang dynasties. Eventually, he developed a unique style known as "strong and elegant," which is collectively referred to as "Liu Style." The Liu Style combines square and round strokes, balances light and heavy pressure, and exhibits diverse variations. In terms of structure, it features a compact central area with spacious surroundings, demonstrating both rigor and openness. The Xuanmi Ta Stele is a masterpiece of Liu Gongquan, written after he turned 60. The stele showcases a neat and elegant script, with clean and decisive brushwork that penetrates the bone, embodying both roundness and strength within clarity.
