It is a set of IELTS exam training materials written by teachers from the Training Department for Overseas Study of Beijing Language and Culture University. Following the format and requirements of the IELTS exam, this tutorial provides targeted reinforcement training for the English language skills needed for the exam, laying a solid language foundation for candidates preparing for the IELTS. The authors are among the first group of teachers in China to engage in IELTS training. They began teaching IELTS exam preparation as early as the 1980s, and this tutorial is a distillation of their nearly two decades of IELTS training experience. Since its publication, the tutorial has received widespread praise from IELTS candidates for its rich and comprehensive content, diverse exercise formats, scientific and practical organization, and its ability to accurately address the key points of the exam and the common difficulties faced by Chinese IELTS test-takers. It has been hailed as a classic IELTS study book and has become the preferred choice for candidates preparing for the IELTS.
The IELTS Exam Skills Training Tutorial, also known as the Black Eyes IELTS Series, is divided into four volumes: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. The Speaking and Listening volumes are accompanied by cassette tapes. The IELTS Exam Skills Training Tutorial was first published in 1997. A revised edition was released in 2000. In 2001, the Speaking volume was updated to its third edition due to changes in the Speaking test format. In 2005, the entire series was revised again.
The IELTS Exam Skills Training Tutorial is the first IELTS exam preparation book published in China and is also the most beloved IELTS study book among candidates. The cumulative sales of this series have reached 600,000 copies.
This book is divided into five parts.
Parts I and V contain twelve simulated writing tests, six for Academic (A) tests and six for General Training (G) tests. The purpose of these sections is to help candidates understand the format and content of the tests, as well as to conduct a self-assessment at the beginning of using this textbook to identify their strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to address and improve these areas during subsequent study. At the end of the textbook, candidates can review their progress.
Part II consists of language diagnostic tests, including three sets: Spelling, Grammar, and Sentence Structure.
Part III focuses on common writing techniques, covering seven frequently appearing writing methods in the IELTS exam: Narrative Writing, Comparison and Contrast, Cause and Effect, Description, Argumentative Writing, Report Writing, and Letter Writing.
Part IV is on test-taking skills, divided into six lessons: Understanding the Prompt, Outlining, Writing an Introduction, Writing the Body, Writing a Conclusion, and Proofreading.
After Part V, there are answer keys and model essays. Most of the writing tasks in the simulated tests provide two to three model essays to demonstrate how the same topic can be approached from different perspectives.
