Features: In the production of historical-themed documentaries, the fundamental components of documentaries are images and events. These historical images are elaborated and analyzed within the production conditions and concepts of "documentation and fiction," "history and the representation of history," "lectern and propaganda," and "touching history and recording changes." Notably, it is the historical events that the audience faces rather than the documentary's visual language. The production foundation of historical images is built on two different levels of understanding of time and space—on the one hand, it can be the on-site of the camera, and on the other, the historical site represented by the camera later.
Secondly, regarding the expressive scope of historical images, this is achieved through the visual biographies of historical figures, reflecting the path of a particular era and society. This historical image emphasizes the historical value reflected in the experiences of historical figures and the fate of the individuals and the era shown in the images. The visual writing itself is not constrained by the inherent structural elements of traditional documentaries. On the other hand, in archaeological and discovery documentary records, images that serve as witnesses to historical sites are integrated. The foundation of archaeology and discovery lies in the on-site descriptions of past events. Through meticulous documentary materials and historical research and analysis of these materials, the writing characteristics of this visual exploration are formed, where description, organization, and analysis become the (base points) for the images to represent the historical events on-site.
Thirdly, guided by the historical perspective of "documenting the present, exploring cultural origins, and recording changes in the era," as well as the purpose of reconstructing historical events, the focus is placed on "completing the process of change." This emphasizes the evolution of historical events, thereby placing the focus of the images on the influential on-site media events and the events shaping public life in the contemporary era. This establishes the expressive scope of historical-themed documentaries.
The production of historical images also relies on three representative writing methods of historical images: "compilation," "oral narrative," and "recreation." These methods form the foundation, narrative strategies, and discourse forms of historical-themed documentary images, thereby establishing the production foundation and practical theory of "representative narration" for documentary historical images.
