Features: Sketching is an important subject in the professional entrance exams for art colleges. In these exams, sketching is considered a comprehensive assessment of a student's compositional ability, modeling ability, skill in shaping and detailed rendering, and understanding. It is an indispensable part of applying to art-focused institutions. Some colleges focus primarily on live portrait sketches, while others examine (plaster) or still-life sketches, either through observation or memory drawing, though the methods differ. The vast variety of preparatory books available makes it difficult for students to choose, and the methods presented in these books can sometimes be similar. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to provide a rational analysis of sketching, combining theory with practice to clarify students' doubts and confront the art college entrance exams head-on.
First, let's discuss the objectives of sketching as an exam subject:
1. Compositional Ability: Similar to the layout principles in Chinese painting and calligraphy (), this assesses a student's ability to control the composition and arrange objects within the frame. It is the starting point of a painting; without a well-composed layout, all subsequent efforts may be in vain. This requires sufficient attention.
2. Modeling Ability: This examines a student's grasp of an object's proportions, perspective, symmetry, features, and anatomy. It is a key focus of sketching and the area where students need to dedicate the most effort.
3. Shaping and Detailed Rendering Ability: To some extent, this directly determines the final outcome of the artwork and is one of the most challenging aspects for students, as it is prone to errors and difficult to master. To score high, students must possess a comprehensive ability to both detail () and adjust the overall composition.
4. Understanding Ability: This is particularly relevant for creative sketching, such as the still-life sketches required by the Central Academy of Fine Arts' design department in recent years. It demands a strong overall artistic foundation.
After understanding the exam objectives, we must adopt an appropriate approach to address them—finding patterns. Here, it must be stated: while the exam is a comprehensive assessment of a student's abilities, it leans more toward (exam techniques) combined with artistic refinement, as the scoring criteria largely depend on these factors.
So, do different schools have varying exam styles? Style refers to the language of painting and is an artistic concept. It can only be said that each school has different focuses, but the essence remains the same. Therefore, after familiarizing oneself with the specific emphases of the target institution, one should not blindly pursue the "style" of a particular college. Instead, it is essential to focus on solving fundamental issues, which is also the prerequisite for further development in university.
