Foreign languages are a sharp weapon for learning advanced experiences from other countries and acquiring new knowledge. Proficiency in foreign languages is one of the essential conditions for being a qualified clinical physician, especially in the information age. Strengthening professional foreign language teaching is a bridge that helps students quickly transition from a basic foreign language foundation to practical application, making it a crucial part of university foreign language education. Medical imaging is a relatively new branch of medicine that has emerged in recent years. Its professional scope is broader and knowledge updates faster than other medical branches. Therefore, the professional foreign language proficiency of medical workers in this field is particularly important. There is an urgent need for a good and practical textbook on medical imaging professional English. Mr. Zhang Pingyang and Mr. Chen Fangman from the Medical Imaging Department of Nanwan Medical College have compiled the book "Medical Imaging Professional English," drawing on their rich experience in teaching, medical practice, and scientific research. This book timely fills this gap. In the writing process, the authors selected 35 English literature materials based on the readers' existing English proficiency, covering all three-level disciplines, focusing on clinical practice, and ensuring appropriate difficulty levels. The arrangement is progressive. This book is an invaluable textbook for teaching medical imaging undergraduate and graduate students and is also an excellent reference book for medical workers in this field to self-study and further their research, improving their professional foreign language skills. The appendix provides reference translations, sample reports, and professional vocabulary and terminology, which are comprehensive and accurate, enhancing the practical value and academic significance of the book. I am a novice in medical imaging, and the above remarks may seem like showing off my ignorance. However, after reading the manuscript, I was indeed deeply inspired and encouraged. Song Jianguo July 2002 Preface The 1999 "English Teaching Syllabus" (Revised Edition) explicitly states that after completing the basic stage and achieving CET-4 or CET-6 level, students should take professional foreign language courses. This shows that professional foreign language learning in the application stage is an important and indispensable part of college English teaching. The syllabus has pointed the direction for the teaching of professional English. Medical imaging is a rapidly developing discipline in recent years, mainly including radiology, ultrasound medicine, CT, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine imaging, and interventional radiology. It is well-known that understanding various medical imaging equipment and their usage, as well as learning advanced examination techniques and their operation and image recognition skills, all require solid professional English knowledge in medical imaging. It can be said that due to the characteristics of the medical imaging profession and its recent rapid development, professional English teaching is particularly important in medical imaging education. Medical imaging professional English should closely revolve around the professional aspects of medical imaging. Our university has successfully established a bachelor's degree program in medical imaging in recent years, with the aim of training high-level practical talents for various healthcare units. In teaching practice, we have found that the offering of professional English is one of the foundations of our success. Guided and supported by Director Rui Jing of the Medical Department, in line with the spirit of the Ministry of Education's "English Teaching Syllabus" and combining the characteristics of the medical imaging profession and some experiences from teaching, we have compiled this "Medical Imaging Professional English" as a teaching text. The main part of the book consists of 35 lessons, covering all three-level disciplines of imaging, with each section including common clinical diseases and focusing on the principle of clinical practicality, considering the advantages of each imaging discipline in disease diagnosis. The appendix not only includes reference translations and typical sample reports but also provides a relatively complete English-Chinese table of clinical professional vocabulary and terminology, aiming to assist students, graduate students, researchers, and medical workers in related clinical disciplines in their learning. It also contributes a small part to the development of professional English teaching materials for the medical imaging profession. Based on our experience and insights, the 20 lessons—1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, and 16 in the first part of radiology; 17, 19, 20, 21, 23, and 25 in the second part of ultrasound diagnosis; 29 and 31 in the third part of nuclear medicine; and 32 and 34 in the fourth part of interventional radiology—are recommended to be taught in 40 hours. The remaining lessons can be used for self-study. Due to the current nascent stage of medical professional English teaching in China and the almost complete lack of experience in medical imaging professional English teaching, coupled with our limited expertise and lack of writing experience, omissions are inevitable.
